I would make sure that the pumps were not starved for oil and possibly causing a low oil pressure problem for other type of potential hydraulic component failure issue.
All the 289C's I've looked at are still running a mechanical injection pump. Although the headgaskets are a common failure. If the coolant reservoir is overfull and the sight glass bubble by the radiator cap is empty, good chance the head gasket is gone. The only issues we've had is alternators (replaced on each machine), one hydraulic quick tach cylinder and bucket bushings. The bushings were due to wear at 2K hours. Great machines IMO.
