The crank pulley is at TDC compression stroke, the valves are shut, and the engine runs (low power under load, exhaust smells a little raw). Here's the problem, the timing marks on the Cam pulley are 180 degrees off. How can the engine run? So the ether goes bang when the piston is half way up and already at gasoline engine compression.. this massive explosion is fighting the piston up to TDC, which is the slowing or even stopping of the starter that you are experiencing.
